General Federation of Women’s Clubs ~ Federation Day

Federation Day for more information use this link.

On April 24, 1890, the GFWC constitution was ratified and 63 clubs officially formed the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. With nearly 3,000 clubs and 100,000 members worldwide, we surely have come a long way since that day 126 years ago. Every year, Federation Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on where we have been as an organization, and look forward to what we will accomplish in the future.

Woman's Suffrage event

Event held to benefit the Nassau Co Library - Fernandina Beach.

We are partnering with the Fernandina Beach Library to host a presentation on the Women’s Suffrage movement in honor of Women’s History month. The event will be held at our club house on March 14th, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Peggy Macdonald, a public historian and professor with expertise in Florida Women’s Fight for Suffrage. Several of our Little Women members will be there to greet the

guests and will be dressed in attire from that time, complete with signs! There will be a signup sheet at the March meeting if you would like to help with the event and/or attend. Light refreshments will be served.

In conjunction with this event, one of our new members, Susan Kosciulek suggested that we read a book about this movement, The Women’s March by Jennifer Chiaverini. She has also agreed to host a book discussion for those members interested in reading and discussing the book. A sign-up sheet for this will also be available at the March meeting with a book discussion date to be determined by interested members.

Little Dresses

Sewing dresses size 2-10, open to all members and sewers in the community.

GFWC Fernandina Beach is excited to announce a new project.  We will be working with Nassau County School District, “Families In Transition” FIT.  These children are classified as “homeless.”  This project is titled “The Little Dress and Accessories.”

Our club is going to make “Little Dresses” from sizes 2 to 10.  You ask, “size 2?” There are students who are mothers registered in schools with very young children.  We will be providing under garments for both little boys and little girls.  The boys will be provided with shorts, t-shirts and socks, donated from YOU!

At our October and November meetings we will need the following: material for dresses

(We have an easy pattern) at least 2 yards 100 % cotton; thread, ric/rac to decorate, binding tape and thin ribbon.  A sample dress will be on display at the October and November meetings.  You are asked to purchase any of the above items listed and take to the meetings.

We will have a “Fun Sewing Together” gathering at the club house on Wednesday November 8th 10 am to 2 pm.  You will be able to sign up at October and November meetings.  You say, “I can’t sew,” but you can cut material, cut patterns.

Please, please if you have friends who are not members, but like to sew, please invite them to participate in this great project benefiting children in Nassau County.

This will be a fun productive day, a lot of fellowship together and of course we will have great refreshments!

Thank You,

Marie Dimos, Chairman
Susanne Steffen, Co- Chairman
